Unpublished paper, 'Effects of stress on the thermoelectric quality of metals. Part I' by J A [James Alfred] Ewing
Reference number: AP/61/3
Date: 1881-1885
Description
Ewing undertakes an investigation with the view of finding whether the gradual mechanical change which goes on with lapse of time after stretching wires (which Ewing described in a paper published in volume 30 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On certain effects of stress on soft iron wires') is associated with a corresponding change in thermoelectric quality. The experiments bring to light some unexpected results with regard to the immediate effects of stress, which Ewing discusses in the paper alongside the effects of longitudinal pull on iron.
Note on front reads 'Archives No 53/86 substituted for this paper.' and 'Mar 30/82 question of further publication postponed'. Includes 19 figures in the text relating to experiments, a letter dated 13 November 1885 and an appendix dated 11 February 1882.
Subject: Chemistry / Physics
Received 31 May 1881. Read 16 June 1881. Communicated by [Henry Charles] Fleeming Jenkin.
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 32 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'Effects of stress on the thermoelectric quality of metals. Part I'.
