Johnson describes a series of experiments on allotropic or active nitrogen and on the complete synthesis of ammonia.

Annotations in pencil throughout. Includes an uncorrected printed proof of the paper, dated 23 September 1882. Bound with one page of pencil diagrams associated with a paper abstracted in volume 31 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the genus Culeolus' by William Abbott Herdman.
