Description
Lee presents a summary of the history of the discovery of the ganglia on the posterior roots of the spinal nerves, and expresses the intention of stating his views respecting the functions of the cervical and thoracic ganglia of the sympathetic nerve and the posterior roots of the spinal nerves in a future communication. He includes in his paper a copy letter from Alexander Shaw, dated 30 January 1872, in which Shaw relays Charles Bell's 'opinions concerning the functions of the ganglions on the posterior roots of the spinal nerves'.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 21 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'Observations on the functions of the ganglia which are formed in the posterior roots of the spinal nerves'.
