Unpublished paper, 'The Bakerian Lecture: On the increase of electrical resistance in conductors with rise of temperature, and its application to the measure of ordinary and furnace temperatures; also on a simple method of measuring electrical resistances' by C W [Charles William] Siemens
Reference number: AP/53/8
Date: 1871
Description
Siemens presents a paper in three parts, covering 'the influence of temperature upon the electrical resistance of metallic conductors', 'measuring temperatures, including furnace temperatures, by electrical resistance', and 'a simple method of measuring electrical resistances'.
Annotations in pencil throughout. Marked on front as 'Archives Feb 1872'.
The Bakerian Medal and Lecture is the Royal Society's premier lecture in physical sciences. The lectureship was established through a bequest by Henry Baker of £100 for 'an oration or discourse on such part of natural history or experimental philosophy, at such time and in such manner as the President and Council of the Society for the time being shall please to order and appoint'. The lectureship has been awarded annually since 1775.
Subject: Physics / Electricity
Received 7 March 1871. Read 27 April 1871.
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 19 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'The Bakerian lecture on the increase of electrical resistance in conductors with rise of temperature, and its application to the measure of ordinary and furnace temperatures ; also on a simple method of measuring electrical resistances'.
