Unpublished paper, 'On a law in chemical dynamics' by John Hall Gladstone and Alfred Tribe
Reference number: AP/53/2
Date: 1871
Description
Gladstone and Tribe investigate what takes place during the process of one metal decomposing the salts of certain other metals which leads to a chemical change proceeding until the more powerful metal has entirely taken the place of the other. The experiments are generally performed as follows: 72 cubic centimetres of an aqueous solution of the salt of known strength, and at, 12° Centigrade, are placed in a tall glass; a perfectly clean plate of metal of 3230 square millimetres is weighed and placed vertically in this solution without reaching either to the top or bottom; the action is then allowed to proceed quietly for ten minutes, after which point the plate is removed, and the deposited metal washed off. The loss of weight gives the amount of metal dissolved, and represents the chemical action.
Annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Marked on front as 'Archives Nov 2/71'. Includes one page of figures relating to the experiments.
