Reference number: AP/50/1
Date: 1868
Description
Broadbent states two main postulates: firstly, that there must be some relation between the substance administered and the animal organism, on which the effects depend, secondly, that, so far as the substance is concerned, the basis of the relation can only be its chemical properties, using the term in its widest sense. Marked on front as 'Archives Dec 1868'. Annotations in ink throughout.

Received and read 18 June 1868. Communicated by Francis Sibson.
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 16 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'An attempt to apply chemical principles in explanation of the action of poisons'.
A version of this paper was published by Broadbent in the Journal of Anatomy and Physiology [later Journal of Anatomy]: Broadbent, William Henry.
