Description

Samuelson aims to account for the successive appearance, in organic infusions, of what seem to be distinct species of protozoa rising in the developmental scale. He commences with some general remarks on the origin of these animalcules, and states his disbelief in spontaneous generation as it is understood by Pouchet and his disciples.

Marked on front as 'Archived Dec 1865'. Includes one page of figures of development of protozoa.

Subject: Biology / Microbiology

Received 8 November 1865. Read 7 December 1865. Communicated by William Crookes.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 14 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the development of certain infusoria'.
