Description

Smith observes that charcoal absorbs oxygen so as to separate it from common air, or from its mixtures with hydrogen and nitrogen, at common temperatures, and that charcoal continues the absorption of oxygen for at least a month, although the chief amount is absorbed in a few hours, sometimes in a few seconds, according to the quality of the charcoal.

Annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Marked on front as 'Another abstract was supplied by the author'.

Received 27 December 1862. Read 29 January 1863.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 12 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the absorption of gases by charcoal. —No. I'.
