Cayley writes on his attempts to identify the successive differential coefficients of the general expression {(x + λ) (x + μ) }^(½k)(√x + λ¯ — √x + μ¯)^(2i).

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 9 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On certain formulæ for differentiation'.
