Unpublished paper, 'Researches on cinchona alkaloids: critical examination of the ordinary methods employed for the discrimination of the cinchona alkaloids, quinine, quinidin, quinicine, and cinchonine, cinchonidin, cinchonicine, together with the optical and chemical characters of their iodo sulphates, upon which new methods are founded' by William Bird Herapath
Reference number: AP/40/3
Date: 1855-1857

Description
Herapath explains that 'in consequence of the gradually increasing scarcity of the cortex cinchonae calysayae and its chief product quinine, many other barks have been introduced into commerce, which furnish alkaloids having a strong general resemblance in the physical characters of those preparations of them more commonly employed in medicine, but differing widely in medicinal properties and commercial value.' He presents a critical examination of the ordinary methods employed for the discrimination of the cinchona alkaloids, together with the optical and chemical characters of their iodo-sulphates, upon which new methods are founded.
Annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Includes five photographs and three plates of figures with accompaning descriptions.
Subject: Chemistry
Received 19 June 1857 / 23 October 1857. Communicated by [George Gabriel] Stokes.
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 9 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'Researches on the cinchona alkaloids'.
