Cayley builds upon the work of Professor [George Gabriel] Stokes and [Barnaba] Tortolini to obtain the equation of a curve. Annotations in pencil and ink throughout.

Includes two pages of geometric figures. Marked on front as 'Archives'.

Received 22 February 1858.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 9 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the surface which is the envelope of planes through the points of an ellipsoid at right angles to the radius vectors from the centre'.
