Unpublished letter, 'On some new compounds of phenyl' from A W [Alexander William] Williamson to Dr [William] Sharpey

Reference number: AP/37/33

Date: 15 March 1854

Description

Williamson shares details of some of the results obtained in an investigation of carbolic acid or hydrated oxide of phenyl, carried out by Mr Scrugham in the Analytical Laboratory of University College [London]. Referring to the substitution products obtained by [Auguste] Laurent from hydrate of phenyl by the action of chlorine and bromine, as well as to its combination with acids prepared by that chemist in conjunction with [Charles] Gerhardt, Williamson states that the substance which they conceived to be chloride of phenyl has been found by Mr Scrugham to be a mixture of two compounds.

Annotations in pencil and ink throughout.

Subject: Analytical chemistry

Communicated by Sharpey.

Written by Williamson at the Analytical Laboratory, University College.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 7 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On some new compounds of phenyl''.
