Description

Newport begins by stating that, having given direct proof, in his former paper (see PT/40/9), that the spermatozoon is the impregnating agent, and also that the liquor seminis does not effect impregnation, he now proposes to detail some new experiments which bear on the views he then advanced; and especially with respect to the nature of the impregnating influence.

Second in a series on fertilisation. Withdrawn from the review committee by Newport in April 1852. Newport then revised that paper and resubmitted it in May 1852 (see PT/46/7).

Subject: Reproduction / Anatomy

Received and read 19 June 1851.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 6 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'On the impregnation of the ovum, in the amphibia (Second Series), and on the nature of the impregnating influence'.
