Howard shares that there was heavy rainfall in Yorkshire [England] in the summer of 1839. He presents a table of mean temperature and rainfall each month for the year 1839, and analyses this data.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 4 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'On the wet summer of 1839'.
