Description
Alderson writes on cicatrices, or scars, and how they are formed in the epidermis in humans and animals. He discusses the role of the rete mucosum (corpus reticulare, Malpighian layer). Alderson shares case study of a woman with scarification from the use of cupping glasses, and observations on a child's umbilicus. Includes two watercolour figures, one of a bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon) and one of an umbilicus.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 4 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'On the difference of colour in different parts of the bodies of animals'.
