Reade shares his observations on the bark of bamboo (Bambuseae), noting a structure of cells and tubes at the plant's epidermis. He also shares observations on the structure of a stalk of wheat (Triticum).

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 4 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'An inquiry into a new theory of earthy bases of vegetable tissues'.
