Paper written by Rudge following reading of the experiments detailed by Captain James Clark Ross, which led to the important discovery of the north magnetic pole, and which were published in the Philosophical Transactions of 1834. Includes table of observations of the magnetic needle made by Captain Abel Tasman from the beginning to the termination of his voyage, extracted from his journal of 1642.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 3 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'On the probable position of the south magnetic pole'.
