Bishop shares his observations on the v-trigeminal cranial nerve and its influence on sight, smell, taste and 'common sensibility'. Includes a case study and details of post-mortem examination in which the patient was found to have a tumour on the optic nerve. There are two diagrams separate to the text. Verso of page 13 has a pencil annotation reading 'Qu. of mind or body?'.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 3 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'Observations on the physiology of the nerves of sensation, illustrated by a case of paralysis of the fifth pair'.
