Description

Davy describes his experiments on the gases produced by the combination of nitric acid and various chlorides and of nitric and muriatic acids. He describes in detail a type of gas created by combining powdered chloride of sodium, potassium, or calcium and nitric acid. Originally written in a letter to Davies Gilbert.

John George Children's initials appear next to the date read. Some annotations and deletions appear throughout in graphite.

Read to the Royal Society on 10 and 17 February 1831.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 3 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'On a new combination of chlorine and nitrous gas'.
