Description
Thackeray describes his experiments on the blood in the vena portae [portal vein], finding that it is darker than in other veins, has a smaller specific gravity, coagulates more quickly, and has more serum and less albumen than blood from elsewhere.
John George Children's initials appear next to the date received. An ink inscription second to last page verso reads 'not to be printed PMR [Peter Mark Roget]'. Annotations and corrects appear throughout in graphite.

Communicated by Sir Astley Cooper. Received by the Royal Society on 21 April 1831.
Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 3 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'An experimental examination of the blood found in the vena portæ'.
