Description

This manuscript was presented twice to the Royal Society, first in the form found at AP/10/6, and later in this form. In it, Daniell recounts his experiments designed to determine the difference in capillary action between boiled and unboiled barometer tubes and the deterioration of barometers over time.

An ink inscription top right of first page reads '(JFWH [John Frederick William Herschel]. No 75)'. Another ink inscription lower, to the left, reads 'Archives' and below this in graphite, 'unpub'.

Subject: Scientific Instruments / Meteorology

Received by the Royal Society on 16 November 1825 [struck out, along with initials 'HD' for Humphry Davy]. Read on 26 January 1826.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper, a very similar version was published in full in The Boston Journal of Philosophy and the Arts in 1826: Daniell, J F. 'On the barometer'. The Boston Journal of Philosophy and the Arts, vol 3, 1826, pp. 251-260.
