Daniell recounts his experiments designed to determine the difference in capillary action between boiled and unboiled barometer tubes and the deterioration of barometers over time.

Red ink inscription in top right corner of first page reads '(5) JFWH' [John Frederick William Herschel]. Below, in black ink, an inscription reads 'To be deposited in the Archives.'

Read to the Royal Society on 20 January 1825.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper, a very similar version was published in full in The Boston Journal of Philosophy and the Arts in 1826: Daniell, J F. 'On the barometer'. The Boston Journal of Philosophy and the Arts, vol 3, 1826, pp. 251-260.
