Description

Plate 1 showing an external view of the organs of hearing in the bowhead whale. The work is inscribed above with publication and plate details. Signed lower left 'W. Clift del. 1811.' Royal Society stamp verso. The animal was procured for Everard Home by William Scoresby from Greenland whaling grounds. The cranium was salted and transported to London for dissection.

Published in Philosophical Transactions as part of paper titled 'An account of some peculiarities in the structure of the organ of hearing in the Balæna Mysticetus of Linnæus' by Everard Home.

Read to the Royal Society on 12 December 1811.
