Description

The main object of this paper is to bring forward additional evidence in support of the theory that the immediate cause of death in cases of asphyxia is the arrest of the pulmonary circulation.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 49 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the physiology of asphyxia, and on the anæsthetic action of pure nitrogen'.

A version of this paper was published by Johnson in the British Medical Journal [later The BMJ]: Johnson, George. 'On the Physiology of Asphyxia, and on the Anæsthetic Action of Pure Nitrogen.' The British Medical Journal, volume 1, number 1573 (1891), pp. 399-401.
