Antoine-Joseph Yvon Villarceau
John Frederick William Herschel
Sir John Herschel publishes Outlines of Astronomy.
1849
Autograph letter signed by sender. Asks for John Frederick William Herschel's comments on Yvon Villarceau's specific double star observations. Yvon Villarceau presents the mathematical method he uses to calculate double star orbits, which he had presented to the Paris Academie in 1847, but it was not published.
1 April 1849 Sender: Antoine-Joseph Yvon Villarceau Reference number: HS/17/418
Contemporary copy in sender's hand, signed by sender. Has passed Yvon Villarceau's memoirs on the calculation of orbits on to G. B. Airy for publication; copies will be sent [see Yvon Villarceau's 1849-4-1]. Notes that Yvon Villarceau's methods are similar to those of U. J. J. Leverrier.
19 April 1849 Sender: John Frederick William Herschel Reference number: HS/17/418a
Autograph letter signed by sender. Is sending a communication to John Frederick William Herschel for insertion in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Seems to be some problem with understanding Yvon Villarceau's calculations of the orbits of double stars, so Yvon Villarceau explains his method.
18 May 1849 Sender: Antoine-Joseph Yvon Villarceau Reference number: HS/17/419
Autograph letter signed by sender. Thanks John Frederick William Herschel for his interest in Yvon Villarceau's work on double stars. Yvon Villarceau sends a copy of a note on double stars published in the Academie des Sciences for consideration by the Royal Astronomical Society Raises a problem of agreement between Newtonian theory and observational data. Yvon Villarceau feels astronomical studies in France are slowing down.
16 November 1849 Sender: Antoine-Joseph Yvon Villarceau Reference number: HS/17/420
Handwritten catalogue of double stars presented to the Académie des sciences in 1847 by Villarceau, but not published. Enclosure removed from HS/17/418. Preamble introducing the observations of double stars by William Herschel, John Herschel, M. Struve which are used for the following tables. Table 1 giving the positions for various observations between 1782 and 1847 with orbit relative to Hercules, 1st approximation and a corrected position. Table 2 comparing the obsevations taken at different date by the astronomers and Villarceau's proposed approximations and corrections.
1 February 1849 Sender: Antoine-Joseph Yvon Villarceau Reference number: HS/19/261
Handwritten note on double stars in relation to the corona borealis presented to the Académie des sciences in 1849 by Villarceau. Enclosure removed from HS/17/420. Various corrections and tables of positions included in the note which opens by citing John Herschel's work on the area.
30 May 1849 Sender: Antoine-Joseph Yvon Villarceau Reference number: HS/19/262
Copy of a letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. Has passed Yvon Villarceau's memoirs on the calculation of orbits on to G. B. Airy for publication; copies will be sent [see Yvon Villarceau's 1849-4-1]. Notes that Yvon Villarceau's methods are similar to those of U. J. J. Leverrier.
